A woman and the master

A woman went to a master and said:

“I have many questions. I came for answers.”

She asked, “Does God exist?” The master replied, “Who would disappear if the

answer were no?” She paused, then asked, “What is truth?”

The master said, “How do you know there is truth?”

Growing restless, she asked, “Which path should I follow?”

The master answered, “Who is walking?”

Her voice sharpened. “Is there any answer you can give me?”

The master looked at her gently and asked, “Who is asking?”

Silence fell. Her face tightened. She was upset— she had received no answers.

Seeing her frustration, the master picked up a shell and held it to her ear.

“What do you hear?” he asked

“The ocean,” she said.

The master smiled.

“Is the ocean inside the shell?

She hesitated.

“I don’t think so."

"And truth is not inside answers,” the master said gently.

“A teacher who gives you answers keeps you listening to echoes."
